New Jersey scored nine seconds into the game and built a 3-1 lead early in the second when Pittsburgh woke up and scored the game's remaining seven goals. The Pens went 3 for 7 on the power play. Maatta to undergo surgery for thyroid tumor (27-Oct-2014)
The Penguins announced today that D Olli Maatta will undergo surgery next week to remove a tumor from his neck that could be a low-grade thyroid cancer. After the surgery, Maatta is expected to return to playing within four weeks.

The Penguins limit Nashville to just 25 shots on goal and win 3-0 in front of 17,218 at Bridgestone Arena. The Pens got a first period goal from Sidney Crosby and then two power-play goals from Evgeni Malkin and Pascal Dupuis in the third. Dupuis' goal was his 400th career point. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped all 25 shots he faced for his 29th career shutout.

The Pens seemed to be cruising to a 3-1 win on goals from Pascal Dupuis, Olli Maatta and Chris Kunitz before giving up two goals in the last 2:39 of the game and then lost on a Justin Abdelkader goal in overtime. Thomas Greiss, in his first game for Pittsburgh, made 27 saves on 31 shots.

The big story was special teams play as the Penguins went 2 for 4 on the power-play while the Islander went 0 for 7. Evgeni Malkin scored one of the power-play goals while Patric Hornqvist scored a power-play and empty-net goal. Sidney Crosby had two assists and became the sixth-fastest player to reach 500 assists behind Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Peter Stastny, Bobby Orr, and Peter Forsberg. Marc-Andre Fleury made 34 saves on 35 shots.
