Penguins blank Blackhawks 1-0 (30-Oct-2003)
The Pens beat Chicago 1-0 on a beautiful Konstantin Koltsov goal. After a scoreless first, Koltsov got the game's lone goal as he came out from below the left circle and beat Chicago goaltender, Michael Leighton, short-side with a sweet backhander at 4:21 of the second period. Marc-Andre Fleury got his first start on the road and his first NHL shutout as he turned aside 20 Blackhawk shots. Fleury becomes the third youngest goaltender to register an NHL shutout behind Harry Lumley (18 years, 65 days) and Tom Barrasso (18 years, 293 days).... Read more

Pens tie Isles 4-4; Mario gets career point 1700 (30-Oct-2003)
The Penguins and Islanders skated to a 4-4 tie in a seesaw battle at Mellon Arena in front of an announced crowd of 10,377. New York opened a 2-0 lead with a shorthanded Shawn Bates goal at 8:03 of the first and an Alexei Yashin goal at 17:07. Pittsburgh then got the game's next four goals: Dick Tarnstrom (19:44 - 1st per.), Martin Straka (0:52 - 2nd), Ryan Malone (3:42 - 2nd), and Mike Eastwood (2:10 - 3rd). The Pens were unable to hold the lead though as Jason Blake and Mariusz Czerkawski scored three minutes apart in the middle of the third period. Mario Lemieux assisted on the Pens' first goal of the game giving him 1700 career points. Konstantin Koltsov had his first ever 3 point game.... Read more

Pens crushed by Isles 7-2 (25-Oct-2003)
The Islanders score three in the first, two in the second and two in the third and beat the Penguins 7-2 in a fight-filled game on Long Island. The Pens avoided the shutout with a shorthanded Rico Fata goal at 19:48 of the second and then added an Aleksey Morozov power play goal in the third. Mario Lemieux got career point 1699 with an assist on the Morozov goal. (Mercifully, my television died during the game so I was spared some of the carnage.)

Devils beat Pens 2-1 (24-Oct-2003)
The Devils score the lone goal of the third period and beat Pittsburgh 2-1 in front of 11,281 at Mellon Arena. Brian Rafalski opened the scoring for NJ with a wrist shot from above the right circle which deflected past Marc-Andre Fleury. The Pens tied it at one when Martin Straka scored with seven seconds to go in the second off a nice backhand feed from Mike Eastwood. New Jersey got the game-winner from Brian Gionta who had the puck deflect off his skate in the crease at 12:40 of the third. Mario Lemieux got career point 1698 with an assist on Straka's goal. Marc-Andre Fleury was named the game's number one star with a 32 save effort.

Penguins and Hurricanes play to 1-1 tie (23-Oct-2003)
The Pens tie Carolina 1-1 in front of an announced crowd of 10,425 at Mellon Arena. Pittsburgh's lone goal was scored on the power play by Aleksey Morozov with 8.9 seconds to go in the first period. It seemed as though Carolina thought the preceding shot by Mario Lemieux had gone in and stopped playing but the puck bounced off the right post to Morozov who easily scored.

Carolina's lone goal came from ex-Pen Ron Francis on a nice individual effort at 12:24 of the second. After Marc-Andre Fleury attempted an ill-advised clearing attempt up the ice, Francis intercepted the puck, fired an initial shot which was stopped by Josef Melichar. Francis followed up his shot and chipped the puck over Fleury and into the goal.... Read more

Penguins tie Flyers 3-3 (11-Oct-2003)
The Pens recovered from their opening game debacle with a hard-earned 3-3 tie in Philadelphia. Things looked bleak after the first period as the Flyers were up 3-0. Philadelphia were up 1-0 with a power play goal less than two minutes in, then notched a shorthander at 14:22 and finally scored an even strength goal with just over two to go in the period. Pittsburgh got a power play goal from Dick Tarnstrom in the second and then goals from Mario Lemieux and Aleksey Morozov in the third to earn the point.... Read more

Pens drop opener to Kings 3-0 (10-Oct-2003)
The Penguins opened the 2003-04 season with a less-than-impressive effort against the Los Angeles Kings... well, everyone except Marc-Andre Fleury who was simply amazing in his NHL debut. Fleury turned aside 46 shots and stopped a penalty shot. (Yes, he did give up a goal and his first shot against but we won't mention that ever again.)... Read more
