Penguins win the Cup!! Malkin wins Conn Smythe Trophy. (13-Jun-2009)
The Penguins defeat the Red Wings 2-1 in Game Seven and win the Stanley Cup in front of 20,066 at Joe Louis Arena. Max Talbot scored twice for Pittsburgh in the second period. Sidney Crosby was hurt in the second with an apparent knee injury and only skated one shift in the third. Detroit made it interesting with a Jonathan Ericsson at 13:53 of the third setting up a wild finish. The Wings seemingly had the puck in the offensive zone for the final six minutes of the game and hit the post and then failed on a last second shot by Nicklas Lidstrom which Marc-Andre Fleury flung his body at to preserve the win.

Penguins force Game Seven with 2-1 victory in Game Six (10-Jun-2009)
The Penguins turn in a physical performance and defeat the Red Wings 2-1 in front of 17,132 at Mellon Arena. There was no scoring in the opening period although Pittsburgh outshot Detroit 12-3 and had two power play opportunities.

Jordan Staal opened the scoring 51 seconds into the second period. Staal and Matt Cooke were on a 2-on-1 and Staal picked up his own rebound and beat Chris Osgood glove-side.

Tyler Kennedy got the eventual game-winner at 5:35 of the third when he banged away at the pick at the side of the net and got it by Osgood. Kris Draper made things interesting with a rebound goal at 8:01. Marc-Andre Fleury and the defense then stood tall. Fleury stopped Dan Cleary on a breakaway with a minute and a half to go. Rob Scuderi then bailed out the Pens with three saves in the crease with under 20 seconds to go.

Penguins tie series with 4-2 victory in Game Four (5-Jun-2009)
The Penguins make the Stanley Cup Finals a best-of-three series after defeating the Red Wings 4-2 in front of 17,132 at Mellon Arena. Evgeni Malkin, after drawing a tripping call, opened the scoring with a power play goal 2:39 into the first period. The 1-0 lead held until the 18:19 mark of the first when Darren Helm intercepted a Rob Scuderi pass and scored an unassisted goal.

Detroit made it 2-1 just 46 seconds into the second when Brad Stuart scored this third of the playoffs. Pittsburgh then reeled off three straight goals in under six minutes starting with a momentum-changing Jordan Staal shorthander at 8:35. Sidney Crosby got his first goal of the Finals at 10:34 off a two-on-one break with Malkin. Tyler Kennedy added an insurance goal off a nice passing play by Chris Kunitz and Crosby at the 14:12 mark.

Marc-Andre Fleury finished the game with 37 saves on 39 shots and was the game's number one star. Evgeni Malkin has gotten a point in 7 of the 10 goals the Pens have scored in the Finals.

Penguins win Game Three 4-2 (3-Jun-2009)
The Penguins get a third period power play goal from Sergei Gonchar and defeat the Red Wings 4-2 in Game Three in front of 17,132 at Mellon Arena. Max Talbot scored the game's opening goal with a one-timer off an Evgeni Malkin pass at 4:48. Detroit responded with goals from Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen. The Pens tied it with a Kris Letang power play goal from the top of the left circle at 15:57 of the first.

Detroit dominated the second period but were unable to score on Marc-Andre Fleury. The Wings outshot the Pens 14-4 in the second.

Pittsburgh got the eventual game-winner from Sergei Gonchar on the power play at 10:29 of the third. After keeping the puck in the offensive zone for 1:23, Gonchar was able to rip a slapshot past Chris Osgood. Max Talbot scored his second of the game at 19:03 into an empty net.

Penguins lose Game Two 3-1 (1-Jun-2009)
The Penguins find themselves in a 2-0 series hole after losing another 3-1 game in front of 20,066 at Joe Louis Arena. Evgeni Malkin scored the lone goal of the first period on the power play at 16:50 although Brad Stuart actually ended up knocking it into his own goal. The Wings scored twice in the second and the eventual game-winner was controversially if you're a Pittsburgh fan. Marian Hossa hooked and then slashed the stick out of Pascal Dupuis' hands preventing Dupuis from clearing the zone. After a scramble out front and several players in the crease, Valtteri Filppula was able to backhand it in. Detroit also added a Justin Abdelkader goal in the third.
