Pens lose 6-3 to Isles for fourth straight loss. (7-Dec-2002)
The Islanders score twice in each period to down the Penguins 6-3 in front of 13,170 at Mellon Arena. The pre-game news was that Alexei Kovalev with sit out due to a bruised tricep and that Kris Beech was recalled from Wilkes-Barre. Hans Jonsson, Mario Lemieux and Martin Straka scored for Pittsburgh. The Pens failed to convert on two 5-on-3 advantages in the second period and went 0 for 6 overall on the power play.

New York opened the scoring 1:10 into the game with a Michael Peca goal. The puck was kicked out of the right corner. Peca beat Andrew Ference to the puck and as he was falling down he lifted a backhander over Hedberg's left shoulder.

Hans Jonsson got his first of the season at 6:29 to tie the game at one. Jonsson "kept" a Martin Straka pass in at the left point, glided in and blasted a shot by New York goaltender, Garth Snow, from the top of the left circle. Replays appeared to show that Jonsson didn't keep the puck in the offensive zone.

The Islanders recaptured the lead near the midpoint of the first with a Jason Wiemer goal. Wiemer took a backhand pass from Jason Blake snapped a shot short-side by Johan Hedberg from the inside of the left circle.

Mario Lemieux tied the game at two with his 13th of the season just over two minutes later. Lemieux took a pass from Straka, who was behind the right goal line, and one-timed it home short-side by Snow from in front.

Michael Peca was credited with his second of the game at 7:50 of the second period. Arron Asham took a shot from the slot which hit Peca to the left of the goal. Andrew Ference dove to knock the puck away from Peca but knocked it into his own goal.

The Isle got the eventual game-winner from Mark Parrish at 14:25. Brad Isbister and Parrish came in on a 2-on-1, Isbister passed cross-ice to Parrish who one-timed it home from the bottom of the right circle.

Brad Isbister scored on the power play at 10:30 to make it 5-2 in favor of New York. Kenny Jonsson took a shot and Isbister spun around out front to backhand it by Hedberg.

Pittsburgh cut the lead to 5-3 when Martin Straka got his sixth of the year. Janne Laukkanen took a wrister from the right point and Straka, standing in the slot, deflected the puck down and by Snow.

The Islanders closed out the scoring with a Jason Blake goal with just under two minutes to go. After Hedberg had denied a Wiemer breakaway, Blake picked up the rebound and knocked it into the vacated net.
