Eric Majeski's (aka Netwolf) Camp Reports for LetsGoPens.com

Camp 2005, Day 2

September 15, 2005

Team Herbie (Black) vs. Team Badger (Gold)
Herbie wins, 4-1

Herbie
LeClair-Crosby-Recchi
Stone-Talbot-VandenBussche
Filewich-Doyle-Kennedy

D. Fata-Jackman
Paquet-Welch
Sersen-
Fleury in goal

Badger
Koltsov-Endicott-Malone
Carcillo-Christensen-Eaves
Collins-Morrison-Bonvie

Melichar, Schneider, Rouleau, Poapst, and Lannon rotated around on D

Caron in goal

First Period
Herbie goal - Recchi (LeClair, Crosby) Herbie led 1-0. Play from behind the net, Christensen had broken his stick and couldn't defend the centering pass.
Badger penalty - Poapst cross-check. VandenBussche missed the net
Fight - VandenBussche vs. Bonvie. Lots of punches, nothing big landed. Pretty even.
Herbie goal - Filewich (unassisted). Herbie lead 2-0. Filewich used his speed to get around the defenseman before going backhand by Caron.

Second Period
Badger penalty - Not sure who. Recchi's wrister stopped by Caron
Badger goal - Christensen (Collins). Herbie led 2-1. Collins picked up a rebound and while falling down, swept it to a wide open Christensen who had a virtually empty net.
Badger penalty - Missed the call. Stone tried deking to the backhand and appeared to have Caron beat, but missed the net.
Herbie goal - Filewich (Crosby, LeClair). Herbie led 3-1. LeClair chipped a puck up the boards. Crosby raced a defender for it while Filewich skated up the middle. Crosby barely beat the defenseman to the puck a few steps into the offensive zone and got the puck to Filewich. He drilled it to the upper right corner. Excellent pass by Crosby on this one.
Badger penalty - Malone trip? Paquet shoots wide.
Herbie goal - Recchi (Crosby, LeClair). Herbie led 4-1. Absolutely brutal turnover leads to a 4 on 1 break for Team Herbie. Team Badger was attacking and a pass went into the offensive zone. Three different players (Malone for sure, maybe Koltsov, and one other) could have taken it but no one did and Herbie went the other way. LeClair to Crosby to Recchi, tic-tac-toe, and the goalie had no chance.

Other notes:
Team Badger lost their #1 center, Shane Endicott, early in the first. He collided with another player or two behind the net and yelled out in pain. He got back to the bench, but went of at the next stoppage. It looked like he was favoring his right ankle, maybe the knee.

I thought Noah Welch played a great game. He was constantly in good position, always had his head up with the puck and delivered crisp passes on target. He seemed to wind up defending Malone a lot and did very well.

That said, Malone didn't look all that great. He seemed a little out of it and looked frustrated at times.

Crosby almost set off another skirmish at one point where he took a swipe and Caron's glove after he had covered up the puck. Carcillo let him know about it, then Talbot came in to get on Carcillo. Bonvie had words for Talbot, but nothing else really happened. Bonvie hooked Crosby down a little later when 87 was looking to get to the net and it looked like something might happen again, but nothing did.

Following the game, Lemieux, Scuderi, and Koci joined Team Badger for a practice session. Fleury also stayed on. It was a pretty light session - no skating laps or anything. I did notice through the game and the practice that Koltsov seems to have more power on his shot.

Team Francis (White) vs. Team EJ (Red)
Francis wins, 6-0

Francis
Murley-Pirjeta-Palffy
Surovy-Paddock-Lefebvre
Dixon-Corupe-Hussey

Tarnstrom-Odelein
Fernholm-Whitney
Nasreddine-Letang

Thibault in goal for first, Sabourin for second

EJ
Roy-Fata-Armstrong
Salmonsson-Hansen-Ouellet
Patrick - McLean-Gutierrez

Orpik, Gonchar, Kelleher, Mason, and Bissonette all rotated on D. Scuderi did not play.

Caron in goal

First Period.
Nothing happened. No goals, no penalties, I don't even recall a good scoring chance on than Thibault robbing Rich Hansen with a leg save off of a cross ice pass.

Second Period
Francis goal - Murley (Tarnstrom) Francis led 1-0. Tarnstrom rushed the puck and threw a centering pass from behind the goal line to Murley, who slipped a backhander by Chiodo. Orpik had nailed Tarnstrom into the boards just as he let the pass go.
Francis goal - Murley (Tarnstrom, Paddock). Francis led 2-0.
Francis penalty - Dixon hook. Lefebvre shot wide.
Francis goal - Dixon (Palffy) Francis led 3-0. Chiodo had made a great reaction save on Palffy but Dixon knocked in the rebound.
Francis goal - Tarnstrom (Lefebvre). Francis led 4-0.
Francis goal - Dixon (Whitney). Francis led 5-0. Whitney threw the long bomb pass across center red. It was a little out of Dixon's reach but hit the lineman. Dixon kept with it, got away from the defender and buried it.
Francis penalty - Paddock cross-check. Hansen shot wide
Francis goal - Hussey (Whitney). Francis led 6-0. Whitney threw an outlet pass to Hussey and he accelerated right past the defender, cut back in on Caron and scored.

Other notes:

Rico Fata had two excellent chances to make it 2-1. Team EJ got a 2-0 rush off of a (now legal) 2 line pass. One forward (I think Armstrong) took the pass on the right wing boards and carried into the zone. Fata headed to the net and the pass came, but he couldn't steer it home. Seconds later he got a shot at a rebound, but Sabourin was there.

Salmonsson's speed was more evident today. He can really cause problems on the back check and I remember at least twice where he took the puck away from guys he caught up to. I'd like to see him and Koltsov race.

I thought team EJ missed out on may opportunities to use the defenseman to generate offense. They have Gonchar and I don't recall him getting a pass once. Give it to him and let him rip it.

Chiodo had a rough day, but he didn't get a ton of help either.

Team Francis had an easy practice session after the win, but nothing much to note.

Thanks for the memories, Ron! Viva la Francis!
